A Simple Guide to Upgrading Your PS5 SSD Storage

By ZZ • July 27, 2024

Modern games are massive, and the PlayStation 5's internal storage can fill up surprisingly fast. If you're tired of constantly deleting games to make room for new ones, upgrading your storage with an internal NVMe SSD is the best solution. It's easier than you might think!

Step 1: Choose a Compatible SSD

Not just any NVMe SSD will work. Sony has specific requirements for performance and size to ensure a smooth gaming experience.

  • Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD.
  • Speed: 5,500MB/s or faster sequential read speed is recommended.
  • Capacity: 250GB to 4TB.
  • Cooling: The SSD must have a heatsink attached. You can buy one with a pre-installed heatsink or add one yourself.

A highly recommended, hassle-free option is the WD_BLACK SN850X, which often comes with a perfectly sized heatsink and easily exceeds the performance requirements.

Step 2: Prepare for Installation

Before you open up your console, make sure you have the following:

  • A well-lit, clean workspace.
  • A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
  • Update your PS5 System Software: Make sure your PS5 is updated to the latest version to ensure SSD compatibility.

Step 3: The Installation Process (Simplified)

Disclaimer: Opening your console involves a small risk. Please follow Sony's official detailed instructions and proceed at your own risk. This is a simplified overview.

  1. Turn off your PS5 completely and unplug all cables.
  2. Place the console on a flat surface and remove the base.
  3. Slide off the bottom cover (the side without the PlayStation logo).
  4. Unscrew the expansion slot cover.
  5. Remove the mounting screw inside, adjust the spacer to match your SSD's length (e.g., "80" for a 2280 size).
  6. Carefully insert your new NVMe SSD into the connector at an angle, then press it down.
  7. Secure the SSD with the mounting screw.
  8. Re-attach the expansion slot cover, the PS5's main cover, and all cables.

Step 4: Formatting Your New SSD

When you turn your PS5 back on, a formatting guide will automatically appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to format your new SSD. Once formatted, you can go to your storage settings and choose to install new games directly to your new M.2 SSD storage.

That's it! You've successfully expanded your console's storage and are ready to download more games without worry.
